Title: Newbie to feeding ferret Nutrical & duck soup by syringe
Post by: ssmcgill on June 16, 2011, 05:04:58 PM
One of our ferrets, dear Spunkmeyer, has stopped eating after a prolonged stomach infection/inflammation. Since he's getting quite weak, the vet we saw today recommended Nutrical by syringe 3x a day, and also duck soup (and water if necessary) by syringe as well. We have a follow up with our regular vet (Dr. Auger) next Wednesday.

The vet today helpfully reviewed feeding by syringe & finding his cheek pocket. Besides scruffing, he also showed us how to grip around the ferret's chest/neck and front paws - though this is hard because my hands are petite, and I'm afraid of putting too much pressure on Spunky's neck & skull. So for now I'm mostly scruffing and kind of blocking his irritated pawing with my arm.

I know you are not my vets, but I know a lot of you have experience with sick ferrets! This is my first time feeding consistently by syringe. I was wondering:

- Are there any other tips for feeding a sick ferret by syringe? Spunky seems to have lost interest in Ferretone, so I can't use that to cajole him. He squirms, paws, and bites the syringe. (At least he's a spunky still, ha!) Maybe I should give more small feedings with breaks?

- Anything else I should try for feeding in general, or watch out for, that I might not have thought of?

Update: He ate part of a teaspoon of soup without scruffing today, hurray! He still runs off or resists anything more, or for the Nutrical, though.

Here is a photo of our sweet little guy when he was pretending to be GQ Ferret.

Many thanks!
Sarah

Hi Sarah,

I'm so sorry to hear that dear Spunkmeyer is still under the weather.  Since I don't peruse these boards as often as I used to, I missed your post a few days ago.

While I cannot help much more via email, I am always willing to help out if you need assistance trying different things.  Just contact me directly so I don't miss your message.

I hope it all works out for him.

Lynn
