MEDIA RELEASE
March 1, 2009

Ferret Rescue Society of Ottawa and Area presents the Spring 2009 Ferret Frolic!

The Ferret Rescue Society of Ottawa and Area (FRSO) is proud to present its Spring Ferret Frolic in McNabb Park (corner of Bronson and Gladstone) on Sunday, June 7, 2009, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. This year’s theme is “Fun at the Circus”.  This annual event is presented by the FRSO to help educate ferret owners and the general public about these wonderful pets and to raise funds for the society.

The Spring Ferret Frolic welcomes ferrets, their owners and curious onlookers to witness a variety of fun ferret competitions. Tube races and best ferret circus costume are among this year’s events.  Additional highlights include a silent auction, a display of FRSO's foster ferrets, opportunities to ask ferret experts questions on ferret health and ownership, sales tables with a large assortment of pet accessories, items for ferret owners and both human and ferret treats.  Proceeds from this event are used by the FRSO to help continue their rescue efforts.  Please note that all ferrets attending this event MUST have received a negative ADV test result within the past year.

The FRSO became a registered non-profit corporation in the winter of 2002 and a registered Canadian charity in 2006. Its mandate is to care for unwanted, abandoned or abused ferrets. It is the only animal rescue group in the Ottawa area that aids ferrets in need. Ferrets are rehabilitated and given any medical attention they require. Those that are healthy enough are adopted out to carefully screened new families. All others become long-term residents of the group at special foster homes. The FRSO has a no kill policy. The only exception is when it is medically impossible to treat or heal a ferret that is suffering.

Each year the FRSO takes in and adopts out more ferrets as it becomes more recognized and well known. Since their inception, the FRSO has taken in over 380 ferrets and adopted out 266.  63 ferrets passed away before finding a forever home. Currently, the group is caring for 52 ferrets. The FRSO does not receive any government grants and relies solely on donations and funds gathered from fundraising events. The Spring Ferret Frolic is one of the society’s biggest fundraisers.

ADV TESTS

ALL Ferrets attending the Spring Frolic MUST have had a negative test in the past year.  THE QUICKCHECKS ARE NO LONGER AVAILABLE SO YOU MUST ARRANGE YOUR TESTS IN ADVANCE!

There are three ways you can arrange to have your ferret tested for ADV BEFORE the Spring Frolic:

1) Ask your vet to do the tests (Most expensive Option)

2) Use the mail in Saliva test from Avecon available at http://www.avecon.com/advabelisa.html

3) Attend an FRSO ADV Test clinic or Spa Day. The cost is $15 per test per ferret (FRSO Members receive one Free ADV test each year).    Our next test date is scheduled for April 19, 2009 at the Jack Purcell Community Centre.
