Title: Wood Stove Pellets!
Post by: ferretfan on March 22, 2007, 07:52:50 PM
If anyone knows where we can find inexpensive bags of wood stove pellets, can you let us know?  According to one of our members, Rona's out of pellets, their last shipment got screwed up and they're not planning on replacing it.  Thx.

Thanks for the update.. that's the store that was sold out last week and "wasn't expecting any more this season".  Either way, I'm glad I stocked up.... 14 bags are stacked away in my basement.

My wife just went to Rona on Merivale yesterday and they have a hole skid in. Better hurry everyone! If you can't make it, just give us a call, or drop us a line, we've got some spares.

With Rona and Home Depot no longer keeping these in stock during the summer months, and Zellers not keeping them at all, we tried everything to get a hold of these babies.  After a failed attempt at Home Hardware, we finally found them.  They go for $4.45 per bag, Ritchie Feed and Seed is the cheapest place to buy them.  Ritchie Feed and Seed usually only have them during the winter months, but they have a surplus of 40 some skids.  Although once those are gone, they are gone till fall, so stock up.

Just bumping this so people know that these are still available at the east end Ritchie Feed and Seed.

Rona (Hunt Club @ Merivale) has some in stock for $4.47/bag.

Ritchies Feed and Seed has them for $4.49/bag.

Bought some at Rona (Innes) today! We'll see how the girls think they compare to Yesterday's News.

They're in the lumber area, opposite the cash, so just drive around back and they'll load them in for you.

Ritchies in the East end is now out of stock and are not planning on brining any more in (it's getting near the end of heating season).  Home Depot and Rona on Innes near the 417 both have pellets in stock.

Looks like that time of year again.  I just went to stock up for the summer and found that the East End Rona is out of stock and haven't ordered any more pellets.  Does anyone know of a store that still has some?  I need a dozen bags!
Thanks.

I might be able to get my hands on some. I'll have to check tomorrow to see if our BMR still has them :),

I'll let you know :)

I never thought to check the local BMR.  Do you know if they keep them in the outdoor yard, or is it inside the store?

Thanks!

Ours are kept out in the yard and they told me that they could order stove pellets through out the year. You may want to ask them that as well :).

The BMR didn't have any, but I did manage to find them at the Nepean Rona.  Apparently, they ran out earlier and brought in a special order.  There's only 1 pallet left, so I doubt if there will be any left by the end of next weekend.

I guess they'll probably be impossible to get now, huh?  :( I've got about five bags' worth left, counting what's in the litter storage thing.

If there's a place that WILL do special orders, maybe we should all get together and order another pallet?

Not impossible, but definitely more challenging.  I would try calling the Ronas to see if they received any more shipments.  Failing that, you may have to look at out of town suppliers, or pay a little more from horse supply stores.

Depending on the number of fuzzies, you might be OK until next fall...

Rona in Gatineau on St Rene has about 160 bags of the wood stove pellets on hand as of yesterday.

I know it's not that likely, but if anyone else goes down to Ogdensburg (upstate NY, you just take the 416 down to where it meets the 401 but take the bridge across the St. Lawrence instead of getting on the 401) to pick up American-shipping-only packages at the UPS store/shop at American Wal-Mart/buy cheaper gas/whatever, the Lowe's home improvement store right across the bridge has wood stove pellets as of last Friday, and the employees seemed confused by my suggestion that they might not have them in the summer.

Apparently today is OPPOSITE DAY at Nepean Rona! By "we have wood stove pellets" they in fact mean "we do not have wood stove pellets". Grrrr. Drove all the way down there and had to come back with nothing to show for it. (Well, except for a bag of ExquisiCat pine from Petsmart that cost $11 for 25 lb...)

The east end Rona doesn't have them in yet, either. And Richie Feed & Seed is apparently not carrying them this year because they can't match the big box stores' prices.

C'mon, guys, it's getting colder at night! People need to heat their houses, and my ferrets need to poop!

The Innes Home Depot has them for $4.99 a bag, straight back from the entrance, right behind a display of furniture.

The Rona and Home Depots stores near Innes and the 417 are both out. Rona was supposed to have more this week, but now say it could be up to a month before they receive a shipment.  Home Depot is hoping to have more next week.. maybe.  As soon as I find some, I'm going to stock up big time.

Bad news... none of the Rona or Home Depot stores in Ottawa have pellets right now.  It seems they were using the same supplier which burned down earlier this year.  Some stores *may* have some stock from alternate suppliers within the next 7 to 30 days.

Pellets are starting to show up in limited quantities.   Rona on Innes had a pallet left this morning.  The downside is they were $5.99 per bag and there is a limit of 6 bags per order.

Does anyone know where we can get wood pellets now?? Last I checked, the Nepean Rona didn't have any, and we are completely out.

The main producer in Quebc had a fire earlier this year.  This, combined with a huge increase in wood pellet stove sales, has led to a major shortage in Eastern Canada.  Some suppliers are going as far as BC for their orders.  As far as I know, the only alternatives at this time (other than switching to Yesterdays News or Feline Pine litter) are:

Call Ottawa Wood Pellet Stoves 613-822-0574 and add your name to their waiting list.  They're at 8310 Mitch Owens Rd., Edwards, Ontario K0A 1V0 (see This Post (http://www.ferretrescue.ca/smf/index.php/topic,641.0.html) for more details).

Try the TSC Stores (http://www.tscstores.com/) to see if they have any Wood Pellet Horse Bedding (it's also in short supply as people are buying it to use in the stoves).

FYI, Rona on Innes has received another shipment of pellets.  These are $6.99+tax per bag and the limit is 20 bags per person.   Stock up while you can!

The guy out on Mitch Owens Rd. had lots in stock today, both hardwood and softwood, for $7 a bag plus GST. (so $7.35 after tax) I bought 400lb and left right as the freezing rain started - that much weight in the back sure helps a RWD car in conditions like that!

They're currently open 'till (I think) 1 on Saturdays and 6 on weekdays. Just drive up, park by the house, ring the doorbell, pay for your pellets, and then back up to where they tell you to go.

The Rona and the Home Depot in Gloucester (near Innes and Blair) both have wood pellets in stock.  The price this year has gone up again ~ $7 per bag (Home Depot is slightly cheaper).

Canadian Tire stores are also selling pellets now for $6.99 per bag.

Only adding this because I am almost out of wood pellets myself but Kinburn Feed and Seed on 3135 Kinburn Side Road  always have wood pellets.  They stock hardwood and softwood but softwood are cheapest.  Best to phone ahead though as I appreciate that it is a long drive for most people, 613-832-1130.

My issue with Yesterdays News is the strong smell of ammonia on the wet litter, I find it overwhelming.

Hi All
Im not from Ottawa but you might want to try horse feed dealers....they usually have some....people use it for horse bedding....might also be under the name of "woody pet" but that might just be around the GTA

Just a reminder to all, and for those who may not have seen Elfbaby's post...

Contact info:
Ottawa Wood Pellet Stoves
Walter Bunda
613-822-0574
8310 Mitch Owens Rd., Edwards, Ontario K0A 1V0

A guy who farms and sells pellet stoves and pellets! He's got lots and lots in stock, $4.80 for the 40lb bags and $4.50 for 35lb bags that are meant to be used as horse bedding. (apparently they are a little softer and break apart a little easier) And he says he keeps them in stock all year!

So if you are willing to drive down to Mitch Owens Road, or if you can work out delivery with him (not sure how much it would cost, but his card says he delivers) you may not need to hoard wood stove pellets in the summer anymore. Yay! But given the problems Rona's had getting them in, I bought 400lb anyway.

If you're driving there, don't trust Google Maps - take 417 to Boundary Rd. to Mitch Owens, not Bank to Mitch Owens.

Edit: Oh, and he apparently only takes cash or cheques, judging by what's on the receipt he gave me. Dunno if he'd actually take a cheque for a relatively small purchase, but regardless, don't expect to use your debit card.

I called Richie feed and seed on 1390 Windmill Ln. , Ottawa, On and they have the "woody pet" brand there for $9.00 i think the size is 13.6 Kg(30lbs) but i forget exactly info on http://www.woodypet.com/horse.html

I am going to be trying this for my rats as i own rats that use a litter box :)

I do not have any ferrets but i was searching around on what wood stove pellets were safe and your site came up and thought to post where to get this stuff all year around also.

Went to the wood pellet guy out in Edwards today!  They had lots of pellets!  Picked up 6 bags, 4 for myself, 2 for the rescue, and it came to $35 with the HST.

I have a question :)

Well with stuffing and bedding's(such as yesterdays news, carefresh) for rats most time we freeze it to be sure no mites/lice and so on in it. Well i wondered if you freeze this pellet at all for ferrets? Seems my rats broke out with mites and now all need to be treated (all 21 of them )>.< And the only new item we got them is the litter/horse bedding.

So i wondered if it would be safe to freeze this pellet stuff before hand(72 hours freeze)

Title: Re: Wood Stove Pellets!
Post by: Georgiesmom on July 24, 2010, 03:23:28 PM
I personally don't freeze my pellets and we don't for the rescue.  I don't know of anyone who has had this problem with the pellets.
We have so many ferrets coming and going it's not something we can ever prevent even though we try to be vigilant.  No sooner do I get my own ferrets clear then I have brought earmites back from the rescue (or maybe I took them there).

Is it possible that you could have carried the mites into your rats area from elsewhere?  Not implying that you have earmites but they could have been on your clothing.

If you are treating for earmites you have to clean everything that they come into contact with or you will be wasting your time.

I can't see what harm it would do to the pellets to freeze them so long as they are in an airtight container/bag.

I'll also ask MaryBeth to answer you, she used to keep rats before she had the ferrets.

Thanks yeah hubby said too only thing best to do to freeze them is air tight baggies, first do a mini baggie test to be sure they do not get wet lol

Yeah we have to do a full clean up now all fabric we use in hot water and such, it stinks when things like this go.

For how i may have got them i do not shop and such at pet stores(i do not supply pet stores) and i did not come in contact with any other animals. But this is kind of common for us to get when buying stuff such as bedding. We use horse wormer paste to treat the rats (we can also use revolution(for cats) And so far this is the only bedding/litter stuff we buy (i use fabric/fleece only in the cages) But yup your so right everything needs to be treated and cleaned with hot water and so on.

I buy all my stuff from richie feed and seed and being that it came from a warehouse it could be quite possible i got it from there :(

I just wondered if ferrets get mites on the body or just in thee ears like cats? For rats it goes on the body of them.

I shall give the freeze test a go also and post how it goes too lol

I understand too ferrets coming and going for us when i did run the rescue(rat rescue) it was the same here too every rat that came in was treated in case also.

Thanks again for replying :) And the ratties are all ok ;) We treated them right away boy it was a super day cleaning and treating ;)

As far as mites goes, I used to have rats and heard of mites in things like shavings, particluarly horse bedding.  So far, I have never heard of mites in the woodstove pellets. I wouldn't worry about freezing it but it certainly wouldn't hurt. Something I used for my rats was the wheat clumping cat litter. It smelled nice, you could pick it out like litter, it was biodegradable and easier on the rat's feet compared to pellets.

Good luck.

....also, I think that skin mites are different than ear mites. The ear mites can be passed between ferrets in bedding or by direct contact.  Skin mites are essentially mange as far as I know.....
