MEDIA RELEASE
March 18, 2007

Ferret Rescue Society of Ottawa and Area presents the Spring 2007 Ferret Frolic!

MEDIA RELEASE

The Ferret Rescue Society of Ottawa and Area (FRSO) is proud to present its Spring Ferret Frolic in McNabb Park (corner of Bronson and Gladstone) on Sunday, June 3, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. This annual event is presented by the FRSO to help educate ferret owners and the general public about these wonderful pets and to raise funds for the society.

The Spring Ferret Frolic welcomes ferrets, their owners and curious onlookers to witness a variety of fun ferret competitions. Tube races, best costume, maze race and ferret curling are among this year’s events.  Additional highlights include a silent auction, a display of FRSO's foster ferrets, a presentation by Dr. Daren Auger DVM, opportunities to ask ferret experts questions on ferret health and ownership, sales tables with a large assortment of pet accessories, items for ferret owners and both human and ferret treats.  Proceeds from this event are used by the FRSO to help continue their rescue efforts.

The FRSO became a registered non-profit corporation in the winter of 2002 and a registered Canadian charity in 2006. Its mandate is to care for unwanted, abandoned or abused ferrets. It is the only animal rescue group in the Ottawa area that aids ferrets in need. Ferrets are rehabilitated and given any medical attention they require. Those that are healthy enough are adopted out to carefully screened new families. All others become long-term residents of the group at special foster homes. The FRSO has a no kill policy. The only exception is when it is medically impossible to treat or heal a ferret that is suffering.

Each year the FRSO takes in and adopts out more ferrets as it becomes more recognized and well known. In 2006, the FRSO took in 60 ferrets, adopted out 53.  Eleven passed away before finding a forever home. Currently, the group is caring for 46 ferrets. The FRSO does not receive any government grants and relies solely on donations and funds gathered from fundraising events. The Spring Ferret Frolic is one of the society’s biggest fundraisers.

In order to run a frolc, we rely heavily on volunteers - before, during and after the event.  If you can help with any of the tasks below, please Contact the Webmaster.  This is an excellent opportunity for Ontario students to earn their Community hours!

Poster Distribution
---------------------
Print copies of our frolic posters, distribute them to offices, vets, pet stores and post them on community notice boards and poster collars (downtown). Poster image files can be found at ferretrescue.ca/files/2007frolic

Event Assistants
-------------------
Help time the various games, watch over games to ensure ferrets don't escape, fill in at various tables as needed.

A reminder:

For the health and safety of all ferrets attending our events, we ask that all ferrets have their Distemper and Rabies shots up-to-date and that they are tested at least once a year for ADV and have received a negative result.

Thank you for your understanding and co-operation.

Don't forget, the frolic is in 1 week!!  Lets hope for perfect weather and lots of fuzzies having frolicing fun in the park.  Please remember to bring your Canadian Tire money for donations as we use this fund to enhance our events.

When you're at the frolic, check out our Prize Table as we'll be giving away selected items from our CafePress store including:

I Didn't Do It! White T-Shirt
Bite Me! White T-Shirt
Devil Mde Me Do It White T-Shirt
Ferret Companion Tote Bag
Dook Tote Bag

After the frolic, we would appreciate it if you could complete our Frolic Survey so we know what can be improved or added to the next frolic in the Fall.

Thank you!

Reminder:  The frolic will be held on June 3, Rain or Shine!

In the event or rain, we'll be installing tents, tarps and sun shades to cover the various event and product tables and to provide some shelter for attendees.    We may adjust the site layout and event schedule to ensure everyone stays dry during the event.

Thank you to everyone who attended, volunteered at or donated to the Ferret Rescue Society Spring 2007 Ferret Frolic!  With your help we raised a total of $2,070.50 for the FRSO and had over 90 ferrets in attendance despite the heat and threatening weather.

The full results are now posted on our website Forums and photos of the event have been posted in our website Photos Section.

If you attended the frolic, we would appreciate it if you could take 5 minutes and complete a short On-line Survey so that we may continue to improve this important event.

Thank you once again and we look forward to seeing everyone at our Fall Frolic on September 16. 2007!
