MEDIA RELEASE

The Ferret Rescue Society of Ottawa and Area (FRSO) are proud to present their Fall Ferret Frolic in McNabb Park (corner of Bronson and Gladstone) on Sunday, September 17, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. This annual event is presented by the FRSO to help to educate ferret owners and the general public about these wonderful pets and also to raise funds for the society.

The Fall Ferret Frolic welcomes ferrets, their owners and curious onlookers to witness a variety of hilarious ferret competitions. Tube races, best costume, maze race and paper bag escape are among this year’s events.  Additional highlights include a silent auction, a display of FRSO's foster ferrets, a presentation on ADV in ferrets, opportunities to ask ferret experts questions on ferret health and ownership, sales tables with a large assortment of pet accessories, items for ferret owners and both human and ferret treats.  All proceeds from this event are used by the FRSO to help continue their rescue efforts

The FRSO became a registered non-profit corporation in the winter of 2002. Their mandate is to care for unwanted, abandoned or abused ferrets. They are the only animal rescue group in the Ottawa area that aids ferrets in need. Ferrets that are brought to the Humane Society are transferred to FRSO for special care. Ferrets are rehabilitated and given any medical attention they require. All ferrets who are healthy enough are adopted out into carefully screened new families. Unfortunately, some ferrets that arrive at the group are no longer compatible in regular family environments. These ferrets will become long-term residents of the group, or will go to special homes. FRSO has a no kill policy. The only exception is if it is medically impossible to treat or heal a ferret that is suffering.

Each year FRSO takes in and adopts out more ferrets as they become more recognized and well known. In 2005, they took in 58 ferrets, adopted out 44 and 7 passed away before finding a forever home. So far this year, they have completed 33 adoptions. Currently, the group is caring for 37 ferrets - some who are waiting for a forever home and some who are permanently placed in special foster homes. FRSO does not receive any government grants and relies solely on donations and money gathered from fundraising events. The Fall Ferret Frolic is one of the society’s biggest fundraisers.

After the frolic, be sure to complete our Survey so that we can continue to improve your frolic experience!

Thank you.

PS, while you're at the frolic, everyone who completes a survey on the Ferret Rescue Society and it's services will be entered in a prize draw to be held at the frolic!  You can find the surveys at the Weights table next to Registration.

Wow, what an amazing day and an amazing turnout!  With the help of our volunteers and everyone who participated, we had at 99 ferrets attending  and raised $2300 for the Ferret Rescue Society of Ottawa and Area! This is by far our best Fall Frolic EVER!

All the details and photos will be posted on our website over the coming weeks (as time permits).  For those who want larger sizes of specific photos from any frolic, please contact the Webmaster (me) and let me know which photo(s) you are looking for.

Also don't forget to complete our Frolic Feedback so that we can continue to improve these events!  It's located at ferretrescue.ca/frolic-feedback.htm

Thank you all, once again!

Yet another amazing day for a frolic!  Despite having to find some tables at the last minute, everything came out as planned.  We had 99 registered ferrets and lots of participation in all the games (a new record for a Fall Frolic!). We also broke the record for most participants in an event – 36 ferrets ran the wonderful maze that was built by John and Shaughn and had our first four time gold medal winner - Balou!

The total amount raised at this event was $2,385.23 plus $9.70 in Canadian Tire money. If we subtract our expenses for food, supplies and site rental ($162.21), our total profit from this event was $2,223.02 – a new record for any frolic! Between this event, recent adoptions and recent garage sales, we’ll have over $5,000 in the bank to cover emergencies, regular vet bills and supplies and products for the next frolic.

Following are the results of the various events:

Lightest Female: Elise 0.52kg (11 entrants)
Heaviest Male: Buzz 1.57kg (13 entrants)
2006 Vet Bill Jan-Aug: Sue & Marcus $8,200 (actual = $8,693.61)
Best Costume: Sonic - Captain Jack Sparrow

A"Maze"ing Race
1st Balou (11s)
2nd Tamara & Natasha (13s)
3rd Chopin (17s)

Tube Races
1st Balou (6s)
2nd Taz & Ricky (14s)
3rd Timoko (18s)

Paper Bag Escape
1st Balou(6s)
2nd Chopin (26s)
3rd El Guapo (31s)

Ferret Jockey
1st Balou
2nd Addian
3rd Angus
