MEDIA RELEASE

The Ferret Rescue Society of Ottawa and Area (FRSO) are proud to present their Spring Ferret Frolic in McNabb Park (corner of Bronson and Gladstone in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada) on Sunday, June 4, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. This annual event is presented by the FRSO to help to educate ferret owners and the general public about these wonderful pets and also to raise funds for the society.

The Spring Ferret Frolic welcomes ferrets, their owners and curious onlookers to witness a variety of hilarious ferret competitions. Tube races, ferret thief, best beggar, best costume, and best ferret impersonation are among this year’s events.  Additional highights include a silent auction, a display of FRSO's foster ferrets, opportunities to ask ferret experts questions on ferret health and owenership, sales tables with a large assortment of pet accessories, items for ferret owners and both human and ferret treats.  All proceeds from this event are used by the FRSO to help continue their rescue efforts.

The FRSO became a registered non-profit corporation in the winter of 2002. Their mandate is to care for unwanted, abandoned or abused ferrets. They are the only animal rescue group in the Ottawa area that aids ferrets in need. Ferrets that are brought to the Humane Society are transferred to FRSO for special care. Ferrets are rehabilitated and given any medical attention they require. All ferrets who are healthy enough are adopted out into carefully screened new families. Unfortunately, some ferrets that arrive at the group are no longer compatible in regular family environments. These ferrets will become long-term residents of the group, or will go to special homes. FRSO has a no kill policy. The only exception is if it is medically impossible to treat or heal a ferret that is suffering.

Each year FRSO takes in and adopts out more ferrets as they become more recognized and well known. In 2005, they took in 58 ferrets, adopted out 44 and 7 passed away before finding a forever home. So far this year, they have already completed 12 adoptions.  Currently, the group is caring for 29 ferrets - some who are waiting for a forever home and some who are permanently placed in special foster homes. FRSO does not receive any government grants and relies solely on donations and money gathered from fundraising events. The Spring Ferret Frolic is one of the society’s biggest fundraisers.

Suspected ADV In Ottawa

We are currently waiting for the results of a second blood test, as the current tests for ADV are known to have both false positives and false negatives.

Since there is little we can do about this, we will still be holding the frolic in two weeks.  As always, we ask that you leave sick ferrets at home, and remind you that no matter what precautions we take, it's always possible to pick up a virus, mites, or other "bugs" at an event where many animals interact with each other.

More info is available in our General Discussions section.

Notice:  The frolic will be held rain or shine.  As of tonight, the only display that has been cancelled is the foster ferret tent (we need the tents to keep the sales tables dry).

Spring 2006 Post Frolic Report - Part I

Despite predictions for a rainy day, the skies cleared overnight and we had another perfect day for a frolic. As a result of the forecast, we cancelled the fosters display and made sure all tables were under tents “just in case” the clouds overhead decided to surprise us.  We had 94 registered ferrets and lots of participation in all the games. The total amount raised at this event was $2,300 plus $11.85 in Canadian Tire money. If we subtract our expenses for food, supplies and site rental ($350), our total profit from this event was $1,950 – a new record for the FRSO! Between this event, recent adoptions and recent garage sales, we’ll have over $4500 in the bank to cover emergencies, regular vet bills and supplies and products for the next frolic.
