Greetings everyone!
It's geting close to that time of year again, when it's cool enough outside for all ferret owners to gather together with their ferrets and have lots of frolicing fun. This years Fall 2005 Ferret Frolic will be held on Sunday, September 18 from 2pm to 5pm, so mark it on your calendars so you don't forget!
Planning of the event is under way and we'll be posting more details as they become available. One important item to note is the
NEW LOCATION
. This years fall frolic will be held at
McNabb Park
at the corner of Bronson and Gladstone. There is plenty of parking on the street and at the adjacent McNabb Community Centre.
We look forward to seeing you there!

Media Release
August 23, 2005
Ferret Rescue Society of Ottawa and Area presents the Fall Ferret Frolic!
The Ferret Rescue Society of Ottawa and Area (FRSO) are proud to present their Fall Ferret Frolic in McNabb Park (corner of Bronson and Gladstone) on Sunday, September 18, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. This annual event is presented by the FRSO to help to educate ferret owners and the general public about these wonderful pets and to raise funds for the society.
The Fall Ferret Frolic welcomes ferrets, their owners and curious onlookers to witness a variety of hilarious ferret competitions. Tube races, sock stuffing, table clearing, best matching costumes, best ferret impersonation and a children’s relay race are among this year’s events. Additional highlights include a silent auction, a display of the FRSO's foster ferrets, opportunities to ask ferret experts questions on ferret health and ownership, sales tables with a large assortment of pet accessories, items for ferret owners and both human and ferret treats. All proceeds from this event are used by the FRSO to help continue their rescue efforts.
The FRSO became a registered non-profit corporation in the winter of 2002. Their mandate is to care for unwanted, abandoned or abused ferrets. They are the only animal rescue group in the Ottawa area that aids ferrets in need. Ferrets that are brought to the Humane Society are transferred to the FRSO for special care. Ferrets are rehabilitated and given any medical attention they require. All ferrets who are healthy enough are adopted out into carefully screened new families. Unfortunately, some ferrets that arrive at the group are no longer compatible in regular family environments. These ferrets will become long-term residents of the group, or will go to special homes. The FRSO has a no kill policy. The only exception is if it is medically impossible to treat or heal a ferret that is suffering.
Each year the FRSO takes in and adopts out more ferrets as they become more recognized and well known. In 2004, they took in 44 ferrets, adopted out 36 and 6 passed away before finding a forever home. So far this year, they have already completed 28 adoptions. The total budget for 2004 was approximately $6,500. An increasing number of ferrets and increasing vet expenses will push their needs to over $10,000 in 2005. Currently, the group is caring for 28 ferrets - some who are waiting for a forever home and some who are permanently placed in special foster homes. The FRSO does not receive any government grants and relies solely on donations and money gathered from fundraising events. The Fall Ferret Frolic is one of the society’s biggest fundraisers.

VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED!
If you are willing and able to take care of the following frolic tasks, please
Contact Us
.
1) Transportation. To save us money, we would like to have 2 mini vans or a van and a pickup to help move items to the site. We figure we can take the first load from our storage area in Blackburn Hamlet, drop it at the site, and then pick the remaining items up at a nearby location downtown (5 blocks away from McNabb park). Please let us know if you are willing and able to assist with this, otherwise we'll have to spend $150 on a van rental.
2) Registration. We need someone to assist Cathy at the registration table.
3) Sales. We need someone to assist Marion at the sales tables.
4) Food. We need someone to staff the food table and watch over the auction items.
5) First Aid. As part of the City of Ottawa's contract, we need a certified first aid person on-site, along with a first aid kit. Can anyone help with this?
6) Folding Tables. We're going to see if we can rent some from McNabb centre, but it would be better if we could find five more 6' folding tables.
7) Sun Shades. As always, the more we have, the better it will be in case of showers.
Garbage Cans. We need to place at least 4 cans around the site.
9) Prizes and Auction Items. Andreas doing her best, but if you can help solicit prizes, it would be even better!
10) Posters. We need help printing and distributing them to vets, pet stores and on the poster collars downtown. You can download the posters from this forum.
11) Event Assistant. Elizabeth will need help running the events.
12) Rope & stakes. We need to rope off the entire event area. That means we either need to buy two 100' ropes and stakes to hold them up, or we need to find someoene who can lend us ropes, etc.
13) Drinks and Snacks. We need someone to go to Loblaws or Loeb to solicit free snack packages and drinks (pop, juice, water).
14) Folding chairs. We might have just enough, but a few more would be helpful.
Thanks!
Lynn

Please Note: There are no tables and benches on the new frolic site. We strongly encourage you to bring your own folding chairs or a blanket to sit on.

Fall Ferret Frolic 2005
Post Frolic Report
The skies cleared just in time for another wonderful Fall Frolic. Warm sunshine brought 70 registered ferrets and we lots of participation in all the games. The total amount raised at this event was $1,655. If we subtract our expenses for food, supplies and site rental, our total profit from this event was $1,370. This will allow us to pay off our vet bill, and still leave almost $1000 in the bank to pay for needed surgeries.
Following are the results of the various events:
Lightest Female Starla 0.59kg
Heaviest Female Anika 1.00 kg
Lightest Male Nahum 0.77kg
Heaviest Male Griffin 1.52kg
Winning Vet Bill Guess
Jeanne $1385 (actual total was $851.16)
Table Clearing
1st Basil
2nd Chopine
3rd Brogan
Tube Races
1st Max - 12 Seconds
2nd Mocha - 20 Seconds
3rd Gismo - 22 Seconds

2nd Sniff - 13 Seconds
3rd Bailey - 19 Seconds.
Im-Mustelidations

Best Under 16: Blake - "Don't Take Away My Kibble"
Best Costume:
Wizzard Ferret - Alastair
Auction #1- Cage - Angela $150 (1 bid)
Auction #2 – Cage - Rick $180 (10 bids)
Auction #3 – Cage - Jill $150 (1 bid)
Auction #4 – Gift Basket - Suzanne $ 40 (4 bids)
Auction #5 – Ferret Plate - Cathy $ 30 (5 bids)
The new site has a lot of postive points about it. It's central to everyone - even people taking transit, it's dedicated to our use (ie we're not competing with other events for access, etc), the walls make a good barrier for escapees, it's visible to the street, which attracts more attention, the open site makes it easier for people to find the various tables and for those working the tables to see what's going on, the trees give a good amount of shade to keep everyone cool.
We also had a really good turnout of volunteers which made setting up and running the frolic much easier and enjoyable for everyone.
For those who missed the event, event photos will be posted at
Frolic Photos
over the next few weeks.
Thanks for your help and participation!
