Just
this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When
an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes
to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends
so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food and water and sunshine,
and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill
and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are
made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days
and times gone by.
The animals
are happy and content, except for one small thing: they miss someone very
special to them; who had to be left behind.
They
all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks
into the distance. The bright eyes are intent; the eager body quivers. Suddenly
he begins to break away from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs
carrying him faster and faster. YOU have been spotted, and when you and your
special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to
be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress
the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet,
so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then
you cross Rainbow Bridge together ...

Passed Away:August 23, 2010

This fuzzy darling was only recently acquired by the surrendering family in hopes of adding her to their existing business. Other than not getting along with their ferrets, she seemed unwell. The FRSO will be investigating what might be ailing her and will keep everyone up to date. She will likely remain a permanent resident, no matter.

Gizmo is timid, sweet and a VERY good listener. He also loves to follow you around the house, always at your feet. Really, really likes his duck soup but soooo stingy with his kisses. Due to this shy-guy's age and nervousness around new ferrets, he will stay as a permanent foster getting as much TLC as possible.

Passed Away:June 11, 2010

Unfortunately, this litter dear wasn't with us for very long. We always warn surrendering families about the risk of underlying medical issues that tend to rear their ugly heads with the stress of change, particularly with the older furkids. We hate it when it comes true. Kramer loved to be held and bonded with my own older fuzzbutt, Bruiser. It was still within the first week when Kramer became ill with insulinoma-like issues. We treated him and rushed him to the emergency clinic, but it became quite apparent that the issue was our arch nemesis, lymphoma. We had no choice but to let Kramer go. He is survived by his cagemate, Moog, who we promise to take good care of and find a new best friend. Sleep peacefully little one.

Bandita came with Harley and they were a sweet pair. They got along with most of the fosters and loved attention from their foster parents. Sadly, as Harley continued to thrive, even after her tail surgery, Bandita started to slow down. It was obvious her spleen was very enlarged and she was uncomfortable. A visit to the vet confirmed our worst fears that yet again, this was likely lymphoma. Even more sad was that the typical treatment of prednisone did nothing to slow the progression of her disease down and it was time to let her go. She will be missed by her foster parents and those that helped her in her last days. Sleep well Bandita.

This beautiful man has come a long way. It is hard to believe that he almost didn't make to and had been touch and go several times. He's now got so much weight to him that I'd almost call him portly! He loves his food and duck soup and has now leaned how to play! Loves cats but not so fond of other ferrets. Meekco came to us in a desperate state, no body fat and wasted muscles. Despite moment of improvement he never really had a chance. Meds worked for a while and then he failed again. Not only did my group love and protect Meekco, my whole family grew to love him too and it was a difficult day when I decided enough was enough. It came to the point that Meekco was so weak he could not stand for long without falling. If love, care and positive thoughts could have kept this little ferret alive he'd still be with me today but sadly it was not to be. Rest peacefully my sweet boy. KB

Smudge finally lost his battle with whatever cancer he'd been fighting. Kim had taken him on my behalf in order to continue with treatment through Dr. Laite for diarrhea, lethargy and weight issues. He had been doing wonderfully since going to Kim's in the fall and then within a matter of a week, went downhill. His initial positive response to pred was shortlived. Kim and I knew it was time to say goodbye. He will be missed by his new friends at Kim's and by Bruiser and Spitz at my furry home. Gyno

Passed Away:December 5, 2009
What a good little boy Gyno is. The poor bloke came to us from a home that just didn't do enough research in ferretry. Because of this, he was carried around by the tail on a regular basis, and has had his canine teeth clipped. These things haven't stopped our little man, not a bit. He's a happy little boy who loves to sleep! Yeah, he's a pretty low key little guy who spends his time sleeping, but watch out, for within this calm little albino hides a war dancing, hissing play-monster! Gyno will let you hold him and rub him for a bit, but prefers to putter about on his own. He does well with other ferrets, but can be a bit bossy at times, with both males and females. He likes A LOT of out of cage time. If you think that you can offer him this, and a lot of attention, he would be a wonderful single ferret for you.

Hardy is extremely well behaved. He is neither a picky eaters nor a biter, and he has a wonderful disposition. He could be a great free roaming ferret in the right house. He is a terrific guy". Willy Wonka

Passed Away:August 24, 2009

This ole guy was a very special little man. Willy was picked up at the humane society after his owner abandoned him and his cagemate. He was seven years old at the time, but you'd never guess that. He loved to play with Mavie, his only ferret friend, but could always find the time to be held and cuddled. His blindness and funny, jutting tooth gave him a pirate look that only made him more endearing and cute. Willy's tenacity and robust health was instantly appealing to all who had the pleasure of meeting him. We hoped this sweet ol' ferret would live on forever but we had to settle for a ripe old age of 9 1/2. We all cried a little for Willy Wonka when it was time to say goodbye....Mavie plays on in his memory...acting just a little bit crazier to make up for her lost pal! Shine on friend......

She, like her cagemates, loves her human interaction and will stop playing with other ferrets to come over and check out what the people are doing. She's very helpful with cleaning though I feel she may slow things down a bit.....okay alot....but then she's soooooo cute you just sort of forgive her for it all......She nips in fun when playing hand to ferret combat. She's super mello with new ferrets and is Storm's bestest pal. She came in the large group of 8.

Digger #2
Digger, may she rest in peace.
Already one month has gone by since we had to make the decision to let our little girl Digger regain her dignity and let her cross the rainbow bridge to be with her dearly departed partner, Ogie. Not a day goes by without my thinking of her endearing qualities.
On February 3rd, 2008, we visited the ferret shelter with our 7-year old albino male, Ogie, who had lost his sable partner a few months back, to find him another friend. Since Ogie was adrenal and would probably not be around for that long, we thought it best to get him a friend that would be around his age and energy level. My husband was the one who picked Digger and we adopted her, even though it was thought that she was a 'lone' ferret who preferred to be alone.
The first time we got the two together, it was hilarious. Digger was quite a vocal ferret and she screamed the minute Ogie would approach her. I put them in a large ferret play pen so that she could have her own space if she so desired. The second night, I found Ogie sleeping under Digger's hammock in such a way that the only thing separating them was the hammock cloth. The third night, they slept back to back and by the fourth night, they were cinnamon buns. It was a match made in heaven!
Our dear Ogie died in June of that year, leaving Digger a lone ferret once more. She thrived on all of the attention that she got. As we have a house in Florida as well as in Ottawa, she had two homes which she loved and she thoroughly enjoyed traveling and discovering new hotel rooms. Last December, we took her to Central Park in New York City. As I walked the streets with her face poking out of my winter coat, I got quite a few interested glances as well as questions such as 'What is that?'.
Digger (aka, Dokie and Moana Lisa) was a moaner. In order for us to hear her throughout the night, her bedroom was next to ours in Ottawa and, in Florida, we kept her in our bedroom. She would moan in her sleep as well as when she did her business. It was sooooo endearing. She pulled on the heart strings of everyone who came in contact with her.
While we were away in Europe for a month this past March, our ferret-sitter paired her with another sable female, Rosie, as Digger seemed to take a down turn. Her activity level was down and she seemed depressed. As the two were inseparable, we adopted the other ferret. Even though Rosie is less than two years of age, they would play and Digger got her groove back for a month or two.
In June, we noticed that Digger was bothered by Rosie so we decided to keep them in separate cages to allow Digger to get some sleep and then get them together for their play time. As soon as we would see that Digger had had enough, we would scoot her to her cage to rest.
Towards the end of her life, she was adrenal and she lost the use of her hind legs which she found quite unacceptable. This prevented her from going to the litter box. After a few weeks of bathing her three times a day (how insulting!) and treating the sores caused by her laying in her urine and feces, we had to deliver her from this hell. It was the hardest decision to make. She will forever be in our hearts as the 'best' ferret we have ever had. We were touched by an angel!

My dear Peewee. You were with me for almost two full years, suffering through the effects of Insulinoma and the the effects of the steroids that controlled it. You had difficulty moving, could no longer eat crunchy food and could barely see. In the end, I was glad to see you cross the bridge to a place where you could run happy and free again. I will miss you my friend, until we meet again on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge. Sleep well.

Passed Away:June 20, 2009

This was Mittens original story:
"Mittens drives me crazy because he never sleeps and likes to stay busy helping his human friends out. He's a round, whitish ball of fur and is so gentle with people when he plays. Loves to talk a lot and can be heard dooking all over the house. Mittens initially mixed well with my big group of fosters but has become rather bossy."
Well, Mittens hadn't changed much, just older, thinner and needed quite a bit more TLC. We loved him just the same and welcomed him back with open arms. Mittens became ill just this spring and stayed demanding and affectionate till it was time to say goodbye. My favourite nickname for this tenacious soul will always get a good laugh from friends. Goodnight my Mittens.........

Passed Away:June 13, 2009

Fleecy was soft and sweet even though he looked like an old boy for sure. He always seemed quiet quite the opposite of Ivory, his busy body companion. Fleecy came to us with some existing medical issues that were easily managed until recently. Again, these little troopers stay positive till the very end and we made the decision to say good bye when it was clear that there were many concurrent medical issues that would inevitably take our sweet friend away, no matter how hard we tried to keep him safe. Don't worry Fleecy, sleep well, and know we will care for your Ivory...

This little sweety came into our care at the end of her days. She had an undiagnosed bowel obstruction that had moved to a point that it was too severe for her to survive. Kiwi seemed shy but sweet when she arrived with her much older companion, Eiko. She played and was healthy with my 'pansy' foster group. Her favourite place to sleep was curled up amidst all the toys which made her difficult to spot.
She seemed quieter than usual for a day or so before very enlarged lymph glands were noted on her neck. She saw Dr. Auger within a day and despite treatment from the vet, and TLC and care from a special foster mum, Kiwi passed away peacefully in her sleep overnight. Your new friends and foster family will miss you but we know that there are friends waiting to greet you on the rainbow bridge.

Rio
On behalf of the Ferret Rescue board and all the fosters, we would like to share our heartfelt appreciation to all who donated to Rio's treatment and kept this sweet little ferret in their thoughts and prayers. Thank you also to Dr. Auger and Dr. Laite for their input and consultation in fighting to save our darling fuzzbutt.
We unfortunately bring the sad news that Rio's battle came to an end today. Numerous courses of treatment were attempted, from steroids to a number of different antibiotics, all to no avail. Rio never stopped fighting but a decision was needed as we had run out of treatment options and a diagnosis had yet to be found. At 13:00, the process to transfer her from Alta Vista Animal Hospital to March Road Animal Hospital began. With the help of Dr. Cheryl Laite, and in the arms of Jen and myself, Rio was helped across the rainbow bridge.
Rio's case is unusual because she was able to remain aware and appreciative of her surroundings, keep a robust appetite and normal urine and stool output all despite the apparent severity of her respiratory issues. For the duration of her
treatment, from Sunday the 17th to Thursday the 21st of May, she was kept within an oxygen tent, on 24hour ICU care, all the while eating her duck soup meals and doling out nose kisses for anyone who asked. Her breathing rate did remain shallow and very rapid even in her oxygen rich environment and the two sets of X-rays that were taken showed an abnormal lung consolidation pattern. After 5 long days, Rio was clearly tiring and we knew that we'd soon have to let her go. Though a bacterial or viral infection seems to have been ruled out, it is still important to obtain a definative diagnosis to be sure Rio's plight is not likely to affect other foster ferrets. We knew in order to find the cause of Rio's issues and to prevent her from truly suffering, we had to say goodbye sooner than later. This has been one of the hardest goodbye's both Jen and I have been asked to face in our many years as part of the rescue.
In the end, we are left with a $2200 bill at Alta Vista, as well as a bill at March Road Animal Hospital for the assistance received from Dr. Laite in helping Rio cross the Rainbow Bridge and in hopefully finding Rio's illness. The total of that bill has yet to be determined, as is the final diagnosis. We will share this information as soon as it is available to us. Keep in mind that a decision to go the route of invasive therapy, non-invasive or not to treat is ferret and illness dependent. We try to let sick animals cross the rainbow bridge for the right reasons and at the right time. Rio's case was difficult but we know that everything reasonable was tried. There are no regrets, only saddness.
As we are a volunteer charity, receiving nothing in the way of official government funding, this latest medical crisis could have left the rescue's bank account very depleted and with no ability to recover even after our biggest upcoming biannual fundraiser. Without your generous additional donations that we have received so far, we may not have been in a position to provide definitive treatment for other sick fuzzies in the near future let alone maintain the current level of care that we offer. We can't thank you enough. For all of you who pulled together to help give us that extra boost, especially in these difficult times...THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts. In additon to getting monetary donations, knowing that we have such a supportive, ferret-loving community has helped to keep our spirits. It reminds us that others share our passion for these wonderful souls and keeps us moving forward even after little tragedies!
We again, would like to thank Dr. Daren Auger and Dr. Cheryl Laite who worked with each other and Alta Vista to try and solve the mystery and save Rio's life. Thank you both for not giving up! We know that she appreciated every extra hour that you gave her, as do we. We couldn't have fought so hard without your support and advice.

Passed Away:April 24, 2009

We did not even get the chance to meet this little dear. He was turned over to the rescue through our veterinarian's office and went directly into emergency surgery in the hopes of saving this young life. It was quickly discovered that the issue was not a bowel obstruction, as suspected, but rather our old enemy, juvenile lymphoma. The decision was made to say goodbye, even before we were able to say hello. Kiki is survived by his sister, Sable, who will live in his memory hiding extra toys and playing extra hard, just to be sure. Some day we can meet Kiki on the rainbow bridge. B.

Passed Away:April 18, 2009
Sweet little Wiley passed away quietly in her sleep curled up beside her foster mom.
She succumbed to the cumulative effect of variety of medical issues - all of which she bore without complaint to the very end.
This sweet little girl, who was generous with her kisses but viciously enthusiastic about stalking and killing her mouse toy will be missed; she leaves behind her foster sisters and long time companions Taz and Liberty and her newer foster siblings Frank, Margaret and Guess.
Wiley was always there to greet me when I came in the front door after being out of the house and even in the end when she was sick she would make the trek downstairs every day so she could sleep closer to the front door and even though she had to be carried back to bed at night she never forgot her goodnight kisses.
I know she'll be the first one there to greet me at the Rainbow Bridge.

Smeagle (aka Tiki)

Passed Away:April 11, 2009
Smeagle is a woman on a mission. She keeps my special ferret room in top form, rearranging things I may have misplaced in my travels. Each day she streaks across the room organizing toys, blankets, my socks and so on......I mean, she's a busy bee. She's also family oriented, finding time in her busy scheduale for some kisses and cuddles.....not for long though....there's always a ferret that needs scolding for moving what she's so meticulously arranged. Too cute! While Smeagle is doing all the work, Deagle is off galavanting around the place with the younger bunch, knocking stuff off shelves, tipping food and water dishes, tripping up poor unsuspecting foster mums......all the while Smeagle is frantically trying to tidy up his mess. He's the cool, older kid in the crowd with not a worry in the world. He's loveable and since he's lazy and never cleans up after himself, he's more apt to sit a bit longer in your arms for some TLC. The two are a match made I don't know where, but they gotta stick together folks. Adoption Pending.

Dylan (previously Merlin)
Passed Away:March 29, 2009
Dylan first came to me as a foster and immediately cuddled his way into my heart. Often called "mama's boy", he always got his snuggle when he woke up, and his favourite treat before bed. We also called him "little old man", as he was calm, if not lazy, and would rather be carried than walk. After surgery to remove a tumour on his manhood, my partner jokingly called him "Diane".
A trip to the sitters discovered that he loved cats and after deliberations, we finally got him his own kitty! It was so much fun to watch my little old man, turn into a playful kit, running and chasing her around, or playing hide-n-seek. When Olive first came home, she was a nervous wreck. She could often be found in his tent, and being the sweetheart that he was, would be preening her. We even took Dylan to her vet appointments because we knew he could calm her fears.
On March 29th, we were on our way to pick them up from the sitters. We had called a few hours earlier and both were doing great. However, 45 minutes before we arrived, we received a call to say that he had passed in his sleep; the doctor suspected a seizure.
Dylan was loved dearly and forever missed.

Jake
Passed Away:March 20, 2009
Jake was just a neat character. He came to the rescue a couple of years ago and became fast friends with a big, loveable fuzzbutt that was being ferret-sat at the time. With his new friend, Guess, he stayed and they both ended up being surrendered back to the FRSO in 2008. Jake never complained and seemed healthy before becoming quite sick, seemingly all of a sudden, and despite his foster mum's and vet's best efforts, lost the battle with every ferret's nemesis, lymphoma. We will take care of Guess for Jake, until these best buddies are reunited again on the rainbow bridge. B.

Rocky #2

Passed Away:March 3, 2009
Rocky is sweet tempered and absolutely loves to putter around following the two legged friends. He is curious and kind and loves to dook dook dook his way through everything. This little kid is likely adrenal and is being treated for it. That\'s okay because he is just as sweet as strawberry jam. Bandit is quiet and shy, but just as sweet as his cagemate Rocky. They deserve a wonderful and loving forever home together. Bandit is partial to rice boxes and tunnels.

Nicky and Bailey are beautiful, with soft, healthy coats. They get on with anyone and fancy those that are coloured just like them (Bear and buttercup). They are planted in amoungst 13 other ferrets and are content. They look for cuddles constantly and love to be held and kissed. They need to be adopted together. Arrived with Angel, Max, Rocco, Mischief, Elmo, and Hershey.

Passed Away:December 3, 2008
Kegan is super sweet but worries easily. He has a history of abuse and neglect but responds well to TLC and duck soup. Prefers to be held to eat it and could do with a few hundred grams. He was obviously loved by his last home at least. Gwen is crazy playful but startles easily. She tends to be nippy when she's worried but forgets all her woes when she sees the rice box. Gets along with all the other crazy ferrets. Would be best with experience owners because of her sensitive personality. Must be adopted together.

Tala

Passed Away:November 26, 2008
Petite, dainty and precious, Tala is a very affectionate and very interactive little girl. She likes to cuddle in your arms, and will even sometimes go to sleep there. Then the beast comes around, and she's dooking and bouncing off the walls! She can be very bossy with new ferrets, especially the small girls initially, but once things get settled, she's usually found right in the middle of a sleepy pile of fuzzies. She also sadly lost her long-time companion of 5 years, Oscar, this past Nov, so she's still pretty sad. She'd do great in a business with lots of quiet, bear sized, boy hugs and cuddles to keep her warm and safe at night.

Mr. Jingles, you will definitely be missed by your foster Mom. Each day you battled just to eat your soup, crawl through your favorite tube and find a warm cozy place to sleep. Passed Away:September 19, 2008

Rickie. I remember when you first arrived. I picked you up from the Humane Society when I first met Lucky. They mentioned that you'd been found in the bush and that the owners had moved past Toronto. They wanted to wait to see if you would be claimed and I worried for 24 hours till I was able to get you. Probably 3 months old at the time, you were wired for sound and covered in ticks. You had been drawing blood there but with me, till the very last moment, it was kisses all the way. You were so bright and spry and the last I thought would ever succumb to anything. I have never seen a ferret climb or jump like you did! This one was a long, hard fight and in the end we were bested by an unknown foe. Love you lots Rickie pants.......good bye for now.

My sweet Cosmo. You began to slow down only a little before you had that 'episode'. You recovered with some help but something was up. We brought you in for surgery to remove some things that could be causing the problems and it appeared to go well. You didn't last the night......yet again, the tough decision to end the life of such a wonderful soul had to be made and we said our goodbyes. You were much loved by your foster family and others that had the pleasure of meeting you. You truly believed to the end that you were a cat....oh well.....we were all okay with that. Love you Cosmosis! Sleep well till we meet again....

Passed Away:July 25, 2008

My sweet little doll Anika has her wings now.
Please light a candle for her. I want to make sure she see all the candles, she desserves the most beautiful way to the Heaven, with all our love in her heart.
Anika was the most sweetest creature on the Hearth.
She will be missed saddly by Petit Ours (Bear) and Nahum. And me I have already a big hole in my broken heart.
Anika was very strong, and for 1 year and half she has battled insulinoma and lymphoma with courage and was always a very good little sweet candy for all the medecines, vet trips, and even one surgery to remove a bad tumor on her leg. She has gone all through that as a Great Lady.
Today was her last trip for the vet. We have helped her to cross the bridge with dignity and softness. No mask as I wanted. She has to fall asleep on my shoulder, and was ready for the last shot. She was already in her dreams when she left us.
Her Doctor was wonderful for her.
Anika is with me at home, until I find the better place for her ashes. I will never let her be alone.
Fly high Anika, I love you

Passed Away:June 12, 2008
I am sad to report that the very old Alice has passed away. She was out playing on Wednesday, on Thursday she was sleeping a lot and on Friday evening she was found in respiratory distress and we ran her to the emergency vet who recommended that she be put to sleep- there were no other options for her, especially at her age. She had been losing weight but was eating, drinking and eliminating as usual. She still played, did not seem to ever be in pain and was very old so it seemed normal.
She was happy and playful throughout her time with us, she enjoyed her playtime and drinking tub water! She loved to hide dog food and curl up in blankets.
Alice will be missed by Stephanie and Jeff

Tika
Passed Away:June 10, 2008
Alas, Tika came to an end of her life in a fairly quick decline that saw her frail but active until the last day or so.
This little ferret was a Miss Busybody Baggage who had two speeds: off and on. When on, she never walked and rarely trotted - she preferred to run like a maniac, even in her latter months on her increasingly reduced hind legs. She was game to run up and down the carpetted stairs even when she had to start taking a break halfway up - down was as tumbled a descent as always, right until the end. Though her legs started to fail, her jaw muscles remained strong into the last hour for a good head-wrassle through the Tea Towel of Doom.
For several years she was living with adrenal cancer (Lupron kept her lively) and a very enlarged heart (meds kept her moving). She was sad to lose her lifelong cagemate Sock Bandit earlier this year, but rebounded (literally) to transfer her energy to bossing and wrassling her human friends all the more. She seemed all her days to be thoroughly occupied living a good life.

Monster

What a cute little monster, in a rough sort of way. Monster is working through an illness right now, and his tummy and bowels aren't quite right. He's in need of some weight on them skinny bones, but is not wanting for love! Monster doesn't like other ferrets, but will tolerate them, so long as they don't get too near him. He also appears to have some psychological issues, likely the result of not enough stimulation, out of cage time and human interaction. Currently we are working on those issues, and are showing Monster love, how to play, and how nice face rubs can be. With hard work, and lots of love, we're sure we'll get him into a happy state where he knows what it's like to be a happy, healthy ferret again. He is not currently available for adoption but we'll keep you posted.

My poor Powder. You suffered so long with your IBD. You would crash, and then bounce back again and again. Scratch, beloved brother of Snoopy has passed away May 7th 2008, just starting his 8th year in life. He had a massive tumour growth inside his belly and could no longer eat anything, Scratch made wonderful friends with my ferrets and they all seemed a little lost without him last night, including me. Scratch gave me everything I could have asked for in an adopted pet, he made my life as well as the life of my 6 other ferrets much much more enjoyable. I'm glad I was the one who adopted him, He will forever be missed.

Sniff
Passed Away:March 24, 2008
On a sunny Easter Sunday, we said good-bye to Sniff, treasured member of our fur family. Sniff had been diagnosed with lymphoma about a week before. He spent his remaining days in the “ferret condo”, luxuriously outfitted with all the latest fleece stylings (thanks Jen and James), occasionally groomed by Sonny, and constantly fussed over by his parents. He left us in our arms wrapped in a blanket, with his favourite squeaky toy and his first-place ribbon from the ferret frolic pageant.
During his short years with us, he achieved the rank of General in the Dust Bunny Liberation Army, dutifully performing perimeter checks, and racing down the stairs ahead of us, in case any insurgent were hiding. His military bravado extended to the attack of any stuffed animal, and he took special delight in telling a 6-foot long Ikea tie-die snake who was boss. For all his conquests, he’d relax in your arms when picked up, and sauntered by most toes without temptation. Also known as “the Brain”, Sniff used his marbles to figure out which rooms were “forbidden”, and hence warranted special ambush maneuvers. Beauty went with the brains, and Sniff was always the one new visitors were drawn to.
Sniff is survived by Sonny and Aiden, who are being spoiled rotten. He was a precious spunky skunky, and will be missed dearly.

Passed Away:March 24, 2008

Oh my Potter Pants. You were such a strong, sweet fellow. i knew you were special when you first came and then got so sick. I fought and begged to save you from a certain death only a year ago and you bounced back in true ferret fashion, dooking and cuddling and showing the younger ferrets how to really play and get along. As often happens with wee furkids, we saw the signs too late of a probable heart disease which surely ended your wonderful life. As all our furry friends that have had to leave so soon, you will be missed so dearly. I know that there will be a few girls missing your glorious, soft fur to snuggle with in the sleep sacks and Goliath will have to fill some pretty big boots to take your role over. Good bye my friend and wait for me. Love your foster mum, though one of many, B.

Sock Bandit
Passed Away:February 9, 2008
This teddy bear of a fellow crossed the Rainbow Bridge peacefully February 9, 2008 at around 6 and a half years old. He was a big sable with a funny stiff dumpty dumpty hop. Although not a lap ferret, he was very companionable and liked to be stroked on the sides of his neck, reaching up with his paws to remind you. He was fond of lying sideways under the roof of a paper bag or cardboard box, tucking his head upside down and scratch scratching mock-furiously at the corner. As he got more fragile, he still liked to lie in there having his head gently tussled and holding onto your fingers with his paws. He was part of a trio, the other two of which had health problems and so were classified among the unadoptive "pensioners" -- and he stayed with his cagemates. Misty went several yeas ago, but going concern Miss Tika has been keeping him on his toes (and on her back, as she insisted on wormed her way under him in the sleeping box). He developed adrenal issues, but shots of Lupron kept him well, though thin of fur in the last year or two. Last spring he quickly developed insulinoma, and after a crisis or two, did well for many months with prednisone (brand name Pediapred only, thank you, accept no substitutions). In January, he began having insulin attacks again, some quite bad, and his dosage was upped. This kept him going in good spirits for a few weeks, fragile, but bright, and glad to keep an interested eye on the action from the central strategic upstairs bathroom. However, the pred suddenly stopped working, as it does, late one night. After long wakeful hours fighting the waves of insulin attack, we went into the vet early morning. He was staggering badly but at least not obviously uncomfortable. Calmly stroked on the sides of his neck, he gently relaxed into the puffer.

Merlin
Passed Away:January 24, 2008
I had to wait 7 years before my parents would let me get a ferret, but Merlin was worth the wait. He was the perfect way I ended my days of either school or work. Coming home and let him out to play with his big sister (80 pound husky named Lily) was always the highlight of my day. And then there was the once a week hunt to find all his hiddy holes and see what he had stolen from people around the house – I think I was the only one that found that funny. He loved the taste of grandma’s legs and chasing his cousin (90 pound pit bull) who was afraid of him, he also had an uncanny talent at finding his aunt's lip gloss at the bottom of her gigantic bag- he was always so mad when I took it away- "all that work for nothing" look. He could be a little terror when he wanted to be but in mommy’s arms he was just simply my baby. I miss him and our nights together, your cage may be empty but my heart is full from everything you gave me.
Merlin was eight and half and unfortunately had to be euthanized on January 24th 2008 due to heart failure.
I miss you Merl, you were the very best way to start my life with ferrets.
Love,
Mommy

Duke
Passed Away:January 9, 2008
Dook Duke you did not deserve to go so soon. When you first arrived, you had to learn to play with so much room and time out and on top of that, how to get along with, YIKES, cats and other ferrets. Within a short time and due to the infinite patience of your foster mum, off you finally went, playing and dooking with your new found friends! After a few months, just when you were getting the hang of things, you became so sick. There were no warning signs, no indication that you weren't well when the cancer struck you down. We found you within short order and attempted surgery to save your blessed soul only to have to say goodbye at the very end. As I tried to coax your heart to beat and your lungs to breathe, my friend and vet looking at me in the surgery room with tears in her eyes, I knew we had lost you. This is when the rescue business doesn't seem fair and I have to keep reminding myself that you spent 4 great and fun filled months in your foster home which is better than nothing. Good bye my sweet Dook Duke.....

Snoopy
Passed Away:December 27, 2007
Little Snoopy came to us with so many issues and we were worried how he would cope. We loved him and encouraged him. All who had the privilege to meet this little, stout fellow were touched and wanted to help him too. All in all, Snoopy lived his happy version of life till the very end. He never complained and all he ever asked for was an endless mound of food to munch on. He learned to 'putter' around and even learned a mini version of a 'happy ferret dance', which consisted more of a shimmy of his weight to the backside and a shake and a poofed tail and then an attempt at a run or in moments like these he was even known to play with a big grin and feigned 'attack'. He attempted to tour in tunnels and discovered that he especially loved to wrestle in tents with hands. He too, discovered the infamous rice box, and it was then we realized that even 'ol Snoopers had learned to be a ferret. Last year, Snoopy was chosen to have not just one, but two secret Santas! He loved his presents and thrived in the affection that was doted on him.
Snoopy blessed our lives for over two years actually putting him in the 'older ferret' stats. Who knew this little guy with so much going against him at the beginning would do so well?! Snoopy started to slow down, though his appetite was the last to waver. We did our best to keep him happy and comfortable and even on his last day he was able to do the Snoopy walk to explore and investigate. As always, with these special souls, it's the many diseases that shorten their wonderful lives and Snoopy's nemesis turned out to be a mass on his stomach that could not be removed with surgery. He spent his last week being carted around in a special sling with a very special foster dad, and being fed and slathered in affection by a very special foster mum so that he was never alone.
Rescued animals will not be with us our whole lives so we go into this vocation knowing that there is a time limit with every fuzzbutt we meet. Still, there will always be the sadness when we need to finally say our 'goodbyes' so we must take strength from when we are able to give the unwanted a loving home, knowing that without us they may have met a different fate.
Goodbye my Snoopy, love you and may you be happily puttering around on the rainbow bridge showing all the other special fuzzies the 'Snoopy dance' when I see you again some day!

Sheila
Passed Away:December 4, 2007
Sheila came to us courtesy of the Gatineau Humane society. Somebody left her in a cage on their doorstep. They kept her for two weeks, feeding her as to put some flesh on her poor little naked body, and when her time was up, one of the employees thought of calling us.
She was diagnosed adrenal, and put on monthly Lupron injections. At first, she only had hair on her legs and face. Steadily, she got more and more fur, but her belly and back stayed bare. After the addition of a Melatonin implant, she grew a full coat of fur. She no longer shivers in her nakedness!
Sheila is a very playful sweet little girl. She is not fond of other ferrets, but she loves a human as a playmate. She is approximately 4 years old. And when playtime is over, she’ll cuddle with you. She’s a real darling.

Passed Away:November 14, 2007

My little Oscar man. Little Oscar passed away recently of a perforation of his stomach. Mister "2 Kisses" was always a joy to be around, and could always be counted on to give you two kisses each and every time you picked him up. Always a friendly little man, he made his daily rounds of the apartment, sleeping and cuddling with all the fosters. He is sorely missed by his Mom and Dad, and especially by his loving sister Tala. Tala was with him when he passed away, and while sadly missing her big brother, is being well loved by Mom and Poppa, and will be forever. We miss you buddy, but we'll see you again.

Max #2
Passed Away:October 7, 2007
What can I say about this little guy? I had such a short opportunity to know and love him though his loss rocks me nonetheless. He was surrendered from an apparent loving home citing a new baby and not enough time for this sweet thing. They mentioned off hand that he seemed to be sleeping more and nothing else. His coat was soft and he appeared healthy and active though his weight felt lighter than it should have been under his healthy sheen. Two days later he was gone. I sat with him as the last of his soul departed for the rainbow bridge and was heartbroken at having somehow failed him. Based on what we saw, an undiagnosed stomach cancer was a likely culprit. It's moments like these that make the rescue business hard to bear but in the name if Max, and all our furry friends, we strive to move forward and continue to learn....even if it means taking our lessons from the 'hard way'. Rest in fun on the rainbow bridge my friend.

Passed Away:July 18, 2007

Tinkerbell found a forever home along with Buttercup and Sid. She had medical problems from day one of her surrender but with TLC and her box of scented Pompoms, she blossomed. Her coat came back healthy and soft and she enjoyed her snug, squishy sleepy places with her other pals and going to the park. Her adoptive family misses her so much but knows that she's there now with her sister Buttercup.... they'll have to wait an awfully long time to see Sid again since he's healthy as a horse.

Passed Away:July 11, 2007
Angel has petite features and looks like a little princess. Looks are deceiving, because this old girl has no trouble holding her own. She always has first dibs to all the best sleep spots. The only thing with Angel is she has quite a sharp nip when she's playing, though not in the least is it related to aggression. With experienced hands, she'll be fine. She does love to be held and loves to play with toys....though apparently it's best to avoid the ones that squeak. As far as how to label her for adoption, we'll have to keep her options open for now. Arrived with Max, Rocco, Mischief, Elmo, Hershey, Bailey, and Nicky.

Storm
Storm was such an inspiration to everyone she met. She was deaf and adrenal (which rendered her ugly as she was almost entirely bald), yet nothing could dampen her spirits. Every day, she would simply wow others as she was usually the first one up and begging us to hurry and open the cage so she could come out and play. She would give us a few dooks and war dance steps before checking up on her mountain of toys (usually the cloth based toys that she preferred), which by the way, had to be stored in a particular order. One time she even managed to steal a rolled-up blanket that was bigger than she was, but couldn’t get it to her stash because it wouldn’t fit under the couch… :-) Before she began her playtime, though, she'd insist on her serving of soup. If it wasn't presented quickly enough, you'd suffer a quick nip on the feet. RIP sweetie and may we meet again over the bridge.

Oscar (previously Brutus)

Oscar was Felix's best friend in the world. We had a rough beginning,
and I managed to get bitten rather firmly while taking him home. We
never really bonded, but he was always inquisitive and determined, and
I loved him well. He especially loved ferretone beyond anything else,
except perhaps Felix. Despite many different sleeping places, six
times out of ten I'd find them curled up somewhere. Oscar adored the
'rubber ball on a sturdy string' toy, which has since been buried with
him. After Felix died, he was rather heartbroken. I tried to help him,
but even then, 8 months after Felix had died, I noticed in one week
that he suddenly lost a lot of weight so I took him to the Vet but
there was nothing she could do and that he was in a lot of pain. Thus
Oscar was put down, to join Felix over the rainbow bridge, where
they're probably just a large lump of happy fur.

Sweetie

Passed Away:June 29, 2007
Sweetie was first rescued by the employee of a local pet store. After a month, she realized that she was beyond her capacity for help, and called me up. That little girl ferret was a loving sweet creature, but neglect had left her a bag of bones, and a combination of lack of exercise and an unknown wasting illness left her unable to move. Despite loving care and good food, she steadily got worse and had to be put to sleep.

Chelsea

Passed Away:June 20, 2007
This little sweetheart came to me from a loving home whose circumstances left Chelsea without the attention she deserved. Tearfully they said their goodbyes but with open arms, I and my family said our hellos. Chelsea won the hearts of all who met her right from the word 'go' and ran our chaotic home for almost two years. She didn't much care for other ferrets but was the most fantastic family pet, behaving more like a cat then a ferret. She never annihilated plant life or pillaged garbage cans or stole keys, although she had been known to sleep in the odd cheerio box atop the breakfast cereal that no one was particularily keen on eating anymore after her nap. She was never caged and spent her days puttering around her large home. She was very fond of cleaning her humans' ears, arms, ankles and so on....almost like a mother scrubbing her child vigorously....someone was always muttering, "....ow, Chelsea, yeesh, my eyebrows....good God...they're not that dirty.....ahgghhh....". Despite Chelsea's happy existence, she was plagued with a number of health issues in her time with us. She was on high dose prednisone for a year and unfortunately, the drug that saved her and prolonged her life also helped to end it. This time it was my family's turn to say our tearful goodbyes to a little girl who had become such an integral part of our home. So Chelsea girl......close your eyes now and then you'll be off to spend your days puttering around helping keep the heaven's angel's eyebrows clean. Remember though, you will be missed so dearly here and I will see you someday soon! Love your foster mum.

Passed Away:June 13, 2007
This foster mum has not had an easy week with two beautiful surrenders leaving me before I've even had a chance to get to know them. What little I have seen of this wonderful girl was precious and I will hold that small token of Salt's personality close to my heart with all the other sweet kids that have come and gone far too soon. She was cherished in her home and just when her family thought they were doing the right thing at the right time, it became apparent that Salt had been battling a silent killer. We did try everything for her, knowing how much she had been loved but we found inoperable adrenal cancer that had invaded her vena cava and liver and we knew that to prolong treatment would force Salt to endure more pain and that would have been unfair. I had to say goodbye to another sweet face that I had only a brief time to hold......She's with friends now and I will see her again some day. Rest in peace dear girl......

As a foster mum I see so many special fuzzies come through my home. I love them all and all have a special place in my heart. The ones that I hold dearest, though, are those that I never get a chance to know. Little Dora was one such ferret. Such a soft spoken, shy and sweet little girl that was with us the briefest of moments. Some fur kids don't tell their families they aren't feeling right and when they move into new homes, these issues can rear their ugly heads, as it was with Dora. It seems she was battling a form of bowel cancer, until she could fight it off no more. I knew, as I held her quiet form in my arms that it was now my decision to make, and I wouldn't let her suffer...she didn't deserve that. I wanted to hold on longer, I didn't really even know her, but she trusted me to make the right choice....and I did, despite my sadness. Goodbye dear little ferret....there are friends waiting for you on the rainbow bridge and I will join you all someday..............love your foster mum.

Today I lost a special friend. Ellie, you were my very first ferret and had been with me for the past six and a half years. You brought much joy to my life and amazed me with your unceasingly curious and playful nature. You are the reason I love caring for ferrets so much and I thank you for bringing the fun of ferrets into my life. In some ways I am relieved that your suffering has ended. It pained me to see you struggle across the floor from the effects of Insulinoma and the meds you needed to control it. At least now you are free to romp and play again with Cassie and Jezabelle. Rest well my friend, you will always hold a special place in my heart.

Passed Away:April 18, 2007
It is with a very heavy heart and great sadness that I bring this news of Sammy's passing. Despite our best efforts, Sammy continued to lose weight, and stopped eating all together. This morning we found her in a rigid seizure type state, and while waiting to see Doc Auger, Sammy died in Jen's arms. She was a joyous and radiant soul, a real sweetheart. She'll be sorely missed by Jack, her snuggle buddy, and especially by her mom and dad. She is now sleeping with Star, Jill, and Mushoe in our Ferret Memorial Garden. See you later baby.

Passed Away:March 14, 2007
Chewy joined my furry family in 2001, unwanted and left at the humane society. We guessed his age to be around 2 years. He was so quiet and had no idea what it meant to be snuggled or to have free roam and play time for most of every day. Never a stray nip and always a sweetheart, Chewy was cherished by everyone. He since learned to play and cuddle and schmooze for treats. As with all the fuzzies that pass through my life and home, he will be forever loved and sorely missed by all. Give ChiChi, Willie and Phoenix a big kiss for me when you get to the rainbow bridge! Till we meet again!

Felix

Felix was a gentle soul, and though it seemed like I almost needed to
teach him how to play, how to take interest in the world, it was worth
it. He was warm and soft, and loving. He managed at least two daring
escapes, though he managed to get back home just fine, despite the
worry involved. He was diagnosed with insulinoma, and ended up being
medicated twice daily for over two years. At that point, the vet said
that the medication dosage could no longer be raised, and that he
needed surgery. After his surgery, he perked up, and despite regular
blood tests, never needed more medication. A year or so after he had
his surgery, he had been fine the night before, but when I woke up, he
was cool and still. He was buried next to my first ferret, Zoom. Next
to the out door cage they had both enjoyed. (The outdoor cage was
connected to the indoor one- they could go in and out as they wished,
year around) Ferret really loved towels and just sitting in the tube
to outside with just his nose sticking out, smelling the air as the
world went by.

Passed Away:February 20, 2007
Buster crossed the rainbow bridge tonight. On the weekend, he had noticeable hind end weakness. Over the course of the next 3 days he went from being wobbly when he ran to being completely unable to use his hind legs. We'll never know what caused it - only that it was neurological and it was progressing rapidly. Not to mention he had a very large right adrenal tumor, a pronounced heart murmur, an extremely fast heart rate and a rapidly decreasing appetite. There was no chance of recovery. so we helped him cross the bridge peacefully. I'm going to miss watching him moving the jingle balls around, his cute black nose and his super soft fur.

Mocha #2
Passed Away:February 12, 2007
Sad news of both Mocha and Skyler the same morning in February.
Mocha has been frail in the last several months. He had cancer in his adrenals (Lupron treatments kept him comfortable), pancreas (pediapred gave him almost a half year of regained weight and much friskiness), plus in January and February, he was fighting an infection on antibiotics. Alas, although his mind and attention were bright, his body gave out one morning in mid-February. His hind legs wouldn't support him, his tummy would not support even duck soup, and he refused even the delicious medicine. Later that morning, he went gently, thanks to a few puffs of anaesthetic.
That very same morning, Skyler developed a urine blockage. Fortunately, he was only in puzzled discomfort and not in pain. He was examined (and relieved right away), but his prostate was found to be so enlarged that only invasive surgery would help, to only a very temporary effect. He too, thanks to gentle hands and the magic puffer, went quietly that same morning.
Both were calm, being together with their lifelong cagemate, and neither were in distress or pain.

You were the most loveable, handsome, adorable little devil of a ferret. As you were our first ferret (along with your sister Bailey), thank you for your help in easing us into your wonderful world. With such an effortless integration, you helped pave the way for other wonderful souls who will enrich our lives. We will forever be grateful for the way that you enlightened our lives with your lovable quirks, particularly the way you used to trot around the house looking so pleased with yourself. Go with the satisfaction that you were adored and will always be missed. Other ferrets will come and go but you will never be replaced. Rest assured that we will look after your sister and your friends. Rest in peace and may we all be reunited one day over the bridge...
Love,

Oh my Silly Jilly. You were so tiny, but you had such a huge heart, and a radiant spirit. You brightened our days baby girl. From the kisses in the middle of the night, to the kisses to wake us up, you were overflowing with love for your Mommy and Daddy, and your brother Jack. Your curiosity got you into trouble before, and you bounced back. I'm sorry I wasn't there to save you the last time. You rest now baby, Daddy and Mommy will take care of Jack, don't you worry. We'll see you later my little love.
Jill passed away suddenly and tragically, a result of her curiosity, and an unforseen danger. She is

Passed Away:September 26, 2006
Our little Grace's time had come, too quickly it always seems.....she captured the hearts of all who had the pleasure of meeting this tiny soul. She looked so frail and it was always a surprise when her crazy foster mum would wind her up and let her loose......everyone gasping in astonishment at her reckless abandon as she rocketed forward, backward and sideways on the couch and off the other side, only to continue across the floor before colliding into some other immovable object.....the tears of pity most certainly would change to tears of merriment. She was found abandoned and lonely, starving in the most horrible of circumstances, only to thrive under our love and care. Her name was chosen because it was with grace that she was found by us and she wore it well. Thank you, little one, for sharing this end piece of your life with us and may your soul continue to entertain all those unsuspecting over the rainbow bridge.......we'll see you soon.

Buttercup

Passed Away:September 24, 2006
Buttercup (Princess Buttercup, as we call her) had to be put to sleep today. She couldn't stand on her own for long this morning, her heart had an arrhythmia, she was having difficulties breathing, and her gums were blueish. Last night she was fine, it happened so suddenly. I brought her to Alta Vista right away. The doctor thought he felt a large abdominal mass, and confirmed the arrhythmia. She looked like she was in a lot of pain, and with that and her age, we decided to have her put to sleep.
She had a lot of fun here. She enjoyed at least two long playtimes everyday, walks outsides, lots of toys and friends and treats. She was very loved, and she will be very missed. I'm glad I had the chance to know her, brief though it seemed.

This big bumbly 4 year old sweetheart came to us with many undiagnosed issues. It is always difficult to know we couldn't have even offered a loving home for him to thrive and know what a great ferrety life really is, if but for a few months. No....in Teddy's case, he was loved with us for just a matter of days. It was with love that we made the difficult decision to put him through no more. So, join our other departed friends and play till your hearts content. As with all of them, we'll see you someday! Teddy is survived by Millie. No worries, we'll take good care of her!

Oh my sweet Pheonix. He left me while I was far away from home at a mere 2 years of age. An undiagnosed problem, maybe a tumour, reared it's ugly head. My family was so distraught and even though I was overseas, I could feel the loss before I was even told. Pheonix was a friend to all and spent his days bouncing around with anyone who could keep up....be it two legged or 4. He will be remembered by the many love nips on the chin and the lap cuddles when he was finally pooped out. He is survived by his big fuzzy family of 7 and all the fosters that had the chance to love him as well. He is buried in the garden and surrounded by flowers. I already miss him so much.

Kiefer was gorgeous to look at and to cuddle, though cuddling is definitely not his favourite thing. Kiefer is brave, more easygoing, more people orientated. He likes to be played with, tickled, have stuffed animals fight with him and be chased by the mop (his favourite). He is naturally less prone to biting although he will nip feet to try to get attention/treats/screams from his foster Mom. He can still be skittish.

Passed Away:August 26, 2005
Kodi, aka Mama, was with us for only a short time. She arrived frustrated and unhealthy. With tons of TLC and patience, Mama began to soften to her foster home and looked for the affection she had missed out on for so long. As Mama began to settle, it was obvious she had been long dealing with undiagnosed medical problems. She had a large insulinoma and right adrenal but despite the lupron, prednisone and infamous duck soup, Mama succumbed to her illnesses. She is survived by Kirby, aka Oliver, who is living out her legacy in a wonderful, forever home........Your foster mum will see you some day Mama.......

Passed Away:August 10, 2005

We are happy to report that wonderful Zak is still with us. We really feared for his life last spring when he got really sick again, but with lots of tender loving care he pulled through. He is so gorgeous right now with his thick winter fur! Zak comes with me into events and classrooms to teach about ferrets. We hope he stays with us a long time! Zak has suspected lymphoma, with good and bad times. He is a big cinnamon boy with lots of kisses and cuddles. He loves tennis balls, Cheweasels and Foamie fries. He hides his balls all over the house, and gets upset when I pick then up for cleaning! Zak is not available for adoption.

Found in a parking lot when just a kit
Frankie was rescued in just a bit
Fostered for a while with lots of love
Til he entered my world with a shove
He met his new brothers and sisters a like
They weren't too thrilled with him, the poor little tyke
But Frankie stood up to them, held his ground fast
And before you knew it, fighting was a thing of the past
He crept into my heart, and under my skin
Left little bite marks if lacking attention
He dooked and he weasel war danced til his body got sick
No amount of meds or TLC could do the trick
So Frankie has passed from this world to a new
And is back with his brothers and sisters, quite a few
He's dooking with Louise, Thelma and Sprite,
Denver, Scuba and Dook are up for the fight
Of who will be the first to cuddle with Little Frankie tonight
So his memories of his new home won't give him a fright.
Goodbye my little Frankie, may you run wild as you play
And have the biggest heart of any ferret from the very first day.

Ashton

Passed Away:April 15, 2005
His determination and ability to over come was something to see. A few times he had me convinced that this trip to the vet with him would be the last. He happily proved me wrong, until today. I knew his blood surgar was bad when I brought him in. I had no idea how bad and of course there were complications. After much discussion with Dr Auger (who was of course very supportive and very compassionate to us)we decided that this time, he was not going to pull through. I always knew this day would come but even today on the way in I was thinking "come on buddy, just one more time". I guess Ashton was too tired. He taught me to not give up. When he stopped using his back legs, he learned how to get everywhere he wanted to go with just his front legs. It did not stop him from playing. He fought very hard and very long to stay here with us and keep us smiling. While I am no longer smiling, I know he has gone on to a better place, I am thankful for the time I had with him. He is missed.

Scuba

Passed Away:January 29, 2005
Scuba ... the most highly energetic ferret I have ever come across in my life of ferrets. How do you describe the ferret that had you in fits of laughter at his antics, moment of frustration because he developed a whole new concept of ferret proofing. Scuba was the only ferret who could clear 29 inches in one jump. Scuba was the only ferret with the cunning to move his doll crib bed over to the enclosure wall and use that to clear the 3 foot wall so he could run around the apartment unsupervised while I was at work. Scuba thought he could swim in the toilet, fly through the air, and climb every single thing that was in his path. He built monuments so he could scale them and get to the most desired object of the week. How do you describe the helplessness of waking up one morning and seeing your ferret struggling for breath? Racing him in to the hospital in the hopes of having them fix whatever problem it is. How do you describe the despair of knowing a blood transfusion did nothing to help him, and that spinal lymphoma was his killer? I held him in my arms, with tears streaming down my face, promising him that I would release him from his pain and suffering and let him go to all his friends at the Rainbow Bridge. And so he has crossed the Bridge to be with all the other brothers and sisters he's had over his happy and rambunctious life. He will be greeted by my first cat JD who loved to play with him, and my very first two ferrets Thelma and Louise, then Bartles and Jaymes and Nebraska, then another Thelma (he'll remember her well, she used to beat the crap out of him), then little Sprite who used to beat him up too, and Denver who used to play wrestle with him, and finally his big brother Dook. Scuba, you will be sorely missed for your level of energy, your cunning and intelligence and always keeping me on my toes. Ode to the ferrets who live hard and die young.

Our last ferret Sugar (winner of the 2004 Burrito wrap and Lightest female at the Spring Frolic and past winner of Smallest female (3 times) and 2nd pinkest nose) passed away in her sleep on December 8th at the age of 9 years, 3 months and 12 days. She was our last girl. We have had 9 ferrets in 13 years. It is awfully quiet at home these days.

Passed Away:November 21, 2004

When first let out, you need to give him some loving right off, failure to do so will result in reminder "nips". He is full of engery, very curious and loves the dryer tunnels from Rona. He is quite affectionate.
Alex was euthanized today as he had a multitude of bladder stones (at least 5) and one blocking his uretha. All I can say is that he had a field day playing today - exploring all the new set up in the apartment. This afternoon when I noticed he was straining, I was watching him really close, and it was inevitable when we saw the x-rays.

Passed Away:November 13, 2004

It is with tears pouring down my face that I email you to tell you that we had Calvin put down this morning. Yesterday he was starting to act sick so I took him to Dr Auger. We did an ultra sound and aspirated three different sets of cells, every one of which indicated lymphoma. Two days ago he seemed
fine and now he was dying.
For the short period we had him, Calvin was a constant delight. He was gentle and easy going, loved the children and he had the most wonderful long and fluffy winter coat. It was like cuddling a teddy bear that gave kisses. Our hearts are broken.

I just want you to know that he had a good home here and is at peace now dooking it out with all his fallin comerades over the Bridge. I'll never forget him and he'll always have a place in my heart.

Once Barney settles in and gets to know you he is great! In the beginning he was timid of people and bit if cornered. Barney passed away suddenly on Oct 11, 2004.

Coco

Passed Away:July 24, 2004
Coco used to have two male partners, Pepper and Zeus. They have both passed over the Rainbow Bridge, and Coco has decided that she'd rather be by herself now, thank you! Every time we try to find her a friend, she doesn't like them. Coco is deaf, and has a very enlarged spleen. When she started to have seizures, the vet diagnosed insulinoma, as well as a mass on her stomack/liver. Coco has bad days and good days, and we are keeping her comfortable until it is time for her to join her friends over the Bridge. She is happy puttering around the house, nosing around anything new, and dooking to herself. Coco crossed over the rainbow bridge on July 24, 2004 at 10:30am. She had another seizure which paralyzed her rear end, making it impossible to move around. Also, she was unable to eat as her enlarged spleen made it extremely difficult to digest food.

Passed Away:July 12, 2004

Lena was abandoned at the Humane Society. Her age is estimated at 4 to 5 years old. She is an advanced adrenal disease case. From the first time I picked her up, all she wanted to do was kiss me all over! Lena loves to shower you with her kisses, all over, all the time.
Unfortunately, she is almost bald, but she is soooo sweet! Lena does not like toys or treats, but she will take Ferretone. Lena is not available for adoption.

Slinky. When she is let out to play, she constantly dooks and runs around looking for humans to play with. If you pick her up, she'll give you lots of loving kisses and even clean your ears for you - you just have to be careful as occasionally she'll give a little nip as well. Also, if you ignore her when she's out, she will definately let you know with a nip on the heels and toes (and anywhere else she can grab on). While she is generally healthy, she does like to pull the fur from around the base of her tail and when excited, can emit a rather strong odor (we think she still has part of a scent gland left). She has always been a single (dominant) ferret and we have not been successful in introducing her to others.

Passed Away:April 6, 2004

Just a short note to share the sad news of our ferret's passing. Pangoban was almost 8 and happy right up until today. We noticed she was quite ill and rushed her to the vet. She was having kidney failure and there was nothing we could do but spare her- so we did. She went peacefully. It was quite a shock, especially since we were watching our other two who have adrenal- she was the healthy one.
She will be greatly missed by us all. Please enjoy our favourite picture of her.

I wanted to tell you about a little soul I had here for a very short time. His name was buddy and he came to us less than a week ago. He had been left in a room to fend for himself and was standing in his own feeces and urine, it smelled strong and the floor was thick with feeces and mold. He had been neglected in everyway possible. He was such a gentle soul that the day after he arrived I put him in with my guys and there was not a sound to be heard and everyone just got along. Two days after he arrived I noticed that his belly was always wet with urine so the plan was to take him in ASAP for a full checkup. Well we didn't make it that far. Tonight when I went in the ferret room I noticed he wasn't right so I picked him up and I could tell he needed to go to the vet. Like so many before him there was this little guy in agony from probably a ruptured tumor in his abdomen. I have gone thru this so many times and I don't think I'll ever be able to get use to seeing them like this, their little body twisted in agony and the look of terror in his face. I brought him to emergency to have him euthanized. I somehow want him remembered because of how special he was even though I only had him with me for a couple of days. He loved to be snuggled and to be near my mouth when I spoke to him and kissed him, he was a true gentle soul. I am very glad that he spent his last days in clean blankets and playing and sleeping in a pile with my guys.

Zeus was a very gentle, loving and laid back ferret when he arrived at the shelter. Nothing really bothered him, and he never complained. He was always willing to give snuggles and kisses.
One evening, when Zeus was sleeping in his blankies we tried to wake him up, but couldn't. He had gone into an insulinomic coma. A quick call to our Shelter Mom confirmed our fears and he was taken back to the shelter to see if anything could be done. After much effort, she managed to revive him and he was started on treatment for insulinoma. Unfortunately, it was too late, and less than a week later he crossed over the Rainbow Bridge on May 28, 2003.

I adopted Little Bean in October 2002 when he was almost 2yrs old. He was deaf and very small for a male ferret but incredibly energetic and sweet. I taught him to "come" and "stand up" and "no!" through hand commands and he was quick to learn.
My Little Bean had health problems right from 3wks in to bringing him home. He had a skin tumour and just a variety of little things wrong. Finally this spring he was assessed as having Lymphatic-Leukemia by our veterinarian. Little Bean was a bundle of trouble right until the end and I refused to believe that a ferret who was so sick could keep acting the opposite. He died in his sleep in May, a month after being diagnosed at the age of 2 and a half. While his death was a surprise (it came so quickly) I couldn't have asked for better, for him to cross the Bridge without having suffered. I miss him tremendously.

Leia

Passed Away:November 2002
Leia was found is a backyard last fall. She was cold and starved, had nails doing the full circle under her feet and a tumor on her tail the size of an egg. I nursed her back to health, her tail was amputated, and she rediscovered that life as a ferret was good, as she started to dance and dook. Always gentle, always sweet, she loved to cuddle on your lap to sleep.
The vet could only estimate her age at between 8 and 10 years old. Leia had a coat of silk, very long and super soft. I liked to run my fingers in it when she dozed on my lap.
This little silver girl had an appetite for bananas, she could smell me opening one from the other end of the house. She begged for any food we were having by putting her paws on your foot and waiting, and most of the time she got some, for the look on her face was irresistible. She danced in front of the door of her cage to be let out.
Everybody loved Leia and wanted to steal her, but I was her lucky gardian. When she could no longer eat kibble, I fed her "chicken gravy" 4 times a day, cleaned her chin after feeding, and her bum after the litter box. When her kidneys stopped working, I took her to her last vet visit and she passed away in my arms. I miss her every day, for she is always in my thoughts. She was a very special ferret.
